Fishing Season Is Finally Back For Australia’s Largest Freshwater Fish
Grab your rod and dust off your lures because it’s game on for Murray Cod fishing. Today, the first day of Summer is the official start of the season for this iconic Aussie sport fish. After a three-month breeding closure, this season is set to be one of the best in years due to recent river inflows.
The Murray Cod is found in our inland waterways within the Murray Darling basin. Australia’s largest freshwater fish is known to grow as big as 1.8 metres and weigh up to 110kg. But finding the Murray Cod is half the fun or challenge (depending on how you see it) for anglers. It’s one elusive fish and loves a good battle so if you can hook this prized catch you’re bloody good at fishing.
Look for areas of faster running water, holes at the bottom of rapids and even submerged rocks and logs. If lures aren’t alluring for you, live yabbies and bardi grubs are your best bet, and if you don’t have either of those try using chicken or cheese as bait.
Just remember the bag and size limits with Fisheries Compliance Officers set to be out in force this summer.
