History of Quilpie

Youngest of all the towns in the shire, Quilpie is known for being its business centre. Proclaimed in 1917, the town began due to the arrival of the railway like from Charleville. At the ‘End of the Line’, you can learn about the rail history in Quilpie by enjoying a tour at the Quilpie Shire Rail Museum.

With the Quilpie Military History Museum located just next door to the information centre. You can enjoy and learn about the long history of inclusion in many conflicts, learn about local legends, discover memorabilia, photographs, literature and more.

Things To Do Around Town

Those ready for action can spend the day fossicking for opals, climb and explore Baldy Top and Table Top Lookout. You can also go four-wheel driving through the endless landscape that is Australia’s Outback. Experience the beauty of an outback sunset from the top of Baldy Top Lookout. A majestic boulder formation which formed naturally over millions of years.

Located approximately 7.4 km from Quilpie on Toompine Road, you’ll find that 2km of the stretch unsealed. With only a 10 minute climb to the top of the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape as far as the eye can see.
