History of Quilpie
Youngest of all the towns in the shire, Quilpie is known for being its business centre. Proclaimed in 1917, the town began due to the arrival of the railway like from Charleville. Located approximately 7.4 km from Quilpie on Toompine Road, you’ll find that 2km of the stretch unsealed. With only a 10 minute climb to the top of the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape as far as the eye can see.
Throughout the town you will find spectacular murals and sculptures along the main street and an art gallery at the information centre. Every year, the gallery features 6 exhibitions which showcase local talent, as well as artists from across the country. Home to “The Jewel Of The Outback”, you will find the astonishing Boulder opal.
