The Great Sandy Straits is a body of water that runs between the mainland and World Heritage-listed Fraser Island. While as the name suggests, it can be a difficult body of water to navigate. It is a haven for all manner of marine life from crabs to whales. One particularly pleasant spot to drop the pick is this sand cay well known to Hervey Bay locals. While it’s not that big It’s this sand that formed this islands big brother Fraser Island the largest sand island in the world!.
The boat we are on is a Maritimo M62 owned by my mate Greg who loves his boat and the lifestyle it brings. Greg supplied the boat and I supplied the prawns, I reckon that’s a pretty good deal for me. On a day like this with a view like that on a boat like this with a beer in your hand, there is nothing better than some fresh local Hervey Bay seafood. Now to wash off that seafood juice, just like the Hervey Bay locals do. It’s time to jump in, swim in and do a bit of beachcombing. Check out Orchid Beach on Fraser Island which sits of the Hervey Bay coast.
Hervey Bay is about 4hrs drive north of Brisbane and whale watching season is from June to October. You can see the full range of Maritimo Boats online at Maritimo.com.au.
