Explore Kroombit Tops National Park Camping

0

The only way to experience the extraordinary views of Kroombit Tops National park is via the adventurous ‘Razorback’ track. Our Campr team took on the challenge of well known Kroombit Tops Four-wheel drive track to reach one of the most breath-taking views we have ever seen.

Kroombit Tops National Park, home to these magnificent views and challenging drives is located 85km south-west of Gladstone in Boyne Valley and is an unmissable location for fans of the great outdoors. Campr host, Dean Miller says the National Parks website suggests only using high clearance four-wheel drive as there is no trailer access on the ‘Razorblade’ route. “The road has long steep and narrow sections. Although it’s not a particularly difficult drive, you certainly need a vehicle that is well set up for something like this and this Ford Ranger definitely is,” Dean says.

The very top of Kroombit Tops National Park

After clawing our way to an elevation of 1100 metres through some fairly tough terrain we were able to take in some pretty spectacular views at the top of Kroombit. “I have only been here [Kroombit Tops] once before about ten years ago and I remember it having made such an impression on me, I couldn’t wait to come back a second time and it’s just as amazing.” “I really think this place is not on the map for most people, most people don’t know about it, but obviously it’s well worth it all,” he says.

Beautiful Betsy is a tangible link to a far gone time

Kroombit Tops camping is just as amazing as the views, with plenty of great spots to set up camp and have a fish. The Campr team’s favourite spot to stay is Lake Callide Retreat. Fellow Callide Camper and Bundaberg local, Michelle says she loves the retreat and their setup, location and facilities. “This is our first time being here [at Lake Callide Retreat] and it’s beautiful, it’s absolutely beautiful,” Michelle says. Michelle says the fishing at Lake Callide is fantastic and there is so much there to catch. “We went red clawing early this morning, checked our pots [for red claws and] they’re there in abundance.”

Kroombit Tops National park has many alluring features, from amazing views, narrow driving tracks, beautiful nature walks, and historic crash sites. Betsy, an American B-24 Liberator Bomber, is one of Kroombit Tops alluring features. Betsy came to a tragic end after crashing in stormy weather on the 24th February in 1945. The aircraft laid in its place at the National Park undisturbed for almost 50 years, until a local park ranger stumbled upon accidentally.

The mysteriously solemn memorial is one of Kroombit Tops best-kept secrets, tucked away for only the truly adventurous and curious to find. You are bound to find something that renders you speechless in the depths of this great Australian landscape. So, be sure to add this trip to your to-do list and check out Episode 34 of the Campr series for more inspiration.
