Lake Awoonga Caravan Park

0

We’re all in a hurry to get to where we’re going. The holiday destination home again, many of us busy with blinkers on just getting through it. It’s easy to miss life’s little treasures when it’s all about the destination and not about the journey. This is, of course, the great joy of caravanning…adventure. You take your time, you do some research on areas that you’re travelling through. By watching episodes of Campr for example and discover places and people for that matter that will make your life richer just by slowing down. This adventure includes stopping off at the popular camping spot Lake Awoonga Caravan Park. Just west of Gladstone on Queensland’s central coast, it is the perfect spot for all your camping, fishing and boating needs.

Love Fishing?

Well, Lake Awoonga not only supplies water to the towns of Gladstone and Tannum Sands. But it also has become a place for people to come and relax and spend time on the water, boating and fishing. In fact, it’s been a highly successful Barramundi stocking impoundment, with people coming from all over the world these days to catch trophy size Barra. Even I pulled one out of here a few years ago that went a metre 18, so big I could have thrown a saddle on him.

But I digress, one former Victorian who saw the light a few years back is Nudge. Who leads this rather dreamy existence, running a boathouse and fishing shack on the banks of the lake. It seems that one of the great joys of owning your own business is you can hang the ‘Gone Fishing‘ sign just about any time you like. And now seems as good a time as any. We’re heading over to a Barra honey hole that Nudge hits regularly and in this beautiful environment, I figured it was a good time to dig a bit deeper into Nudge’s life.

Lake Awoonga Caravan Park

No fish today, but the journey has been just as important. See how my mantra is working out? Remember it’s about the journey… not the destination. Just up the hill is the Lake Awoonga Caravan Park, which is owned by Ange and Sharpie. The park has had a real spruce up, with plenty of grass level powered sites, a small shop which caters for essentials and views of the dam, that has me scratching my head wondering if I should have stayed longer.

And for now let’s take a look at the van, it’s perfect for a trip like this and the fact that it comes with an ensuite means I don’t care how far I am from the amenities block, I have all I need here in my own private universe. If you love space, peace and quiet and the chance to land a big Barra or two. Then consider Lake Awoonga on your next Bruce Highway run and enjoy the journey.

Here’s how you book a boat with Nudge or a caravan or campsite with Ange at Lake Awoonga. The Jayco Journey Outback is just one of a massive range of Jayco vans worth checking out in the flesh at Brisbane Camperland. Check out another popular lake near Gladstone, Lake Callide.
